AFRO FESTIVAL
June 29th–30th 2024
For over two decades, the Afro Festival has brought together the museum and the general public to protect cultural heritage through educational and popular programs, as well as to promote African arts and crafts. During these days, the Museum of African Art transforms into a veritable beehive—a place of acquaintance, exchange of ideas, and good cheer inspired by discoveries and immersion in various forms of creativity originating from Africa.
With the valuable support of the African Diplomatic Community in Belgrade, specially arranged stands will showcase the diverse cultural, touristic, and gastronomic treasures of Africa in a special Durbar program. This year, the embassies of Algeria, Angola, Brazil, Egypt, DR Congo, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, Somalia, and Tunisia, along with the consulates of Gabon, Jamaica, and Namibia, are participating.

ZDRAVKO PEČAR │ (SELF)PORTRAITS
Through the exhibition “Zdravko Pečar – (SELF)PORTRAITS” we offer several perspectives on the kaleidoscopic personality of Zdravko Pečar, encompassing his life, work, and enduring legacy. This exhibition acts as a polyptych, unveiling his journey through pivotal historical events, the zeitgeist of his era, revolutionary endeavours, diplomatic engagements, scholarly research and publications, photographic archives, printed records, and other significant documentation. It showcases his dynamic actions, which at times yield ambivalent outcomes and consequences, yet always resonate with vitality.
Approaching Zdravko Pečar from a certain temporal remove, especially bearing in mind the specificities of the Yugoslav and Non-Aligned framework within which he laboured, it was impossible for us to resist the impression that through the exhibition process we are dealing with a man who has almost stepped into the realm of fiction and become a character from a book – a protagonist of his own life. And yet, we remain acutely aware of his tangible presence as a flesh-andblood individual who continues to resonate within the landscapes of memory, even today...

BWITI/BWĒTĒ: RELIGION, TRADITION, RITE OR RITUAL?
Paul Armand Mombey Indaki
Bwētē is a spiritual and cultural practice of the Membē people, an ethnic group predominantly found in Southern Gabon. This tradition is part of the larger Bwiti spiritual system, which is also practiced by other ethnic groups in Gabon and surrounding countries.
The sacred tradition of Bwētē includes animism and ancestor worship, characterized by rituals, ceremonies, and the use of sacred plants, primarily the Tabernanthe iboga plant, known for its psychedelic and dissociative properties. It is specifically cultivated for spiritual development and to stabilize community relations, addressing familial issues and resolving anxieties. Bwiti Fang, emerging in the early 1900s, represents a significant evolution of the original Bwētē Disoumba practiced by Tshogo community. This rite reflects a unique syncretism, blending traditional spiritual practices with elements of Christianity.
The guest lecturer will provide an overview of the etymology of the terms Bwētē/Bwiti, as well as the origins of this system that integrates knowledge from Babongo pygmies and is associated with the migrations of Bantu communities in Gabon.
Paul Armand Mombey Indaki is a recognised leader in the tourism sector in Gabon. He currently serves as the president of GOTOGABON (Group of Operators of Tourism of Gabon), tirelessly promoting and developing tourism in Gabon. Initiated into Bwiti and various other initiation rites in Gabon, he also serves as a consultant for Gabonese rites and traditions.
Paul Armand is founder CEO of the Tour Operator – Gabon Tourisme Ltd , where he demonstrates his expertise in tourism management and travel organization. His extensive and diverse experience makes him a key figure in the tourism and cultural sectors in Gabon.

TRADITIONAL WEST AFRICAN MUSIC – DJEMBE
Dragica S. Jovanović
The djembe, a percussion instrument originating from the Malinka ethnic group of West Africa, is traditionally crafted from a single piece of indigenous West African wood. Played exclusively with the hands on stretched animal skin, it aims to unite people in peace - anke djé, anke bé. Traditionally, the djembe and dundun accompany dance and song, with rhythmic patterns directly tied to specific events, from celebrations to rituals like soli (circumcision) or kasa (field tilling). In the latter half of the 20th century, Guinean ensemble Les Ballets Africains played a crucial role in spreading West African folklore beyond the continent. This presentation underscores that today, despite its local and specific origins, the tradition of djembe playing is rapidly globalizing.
Dragica S. Jovanović earned her master's degree and defended her thesis at the Department of Art History, Faculty of Philosophy, Belgrade. She has served as a curator at the "Sunce" gallery and as an advisor-conservator at the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Belgrade. She is a member of ULUPUDS (Art Theory and Criticism Section), AIKA Serbia (International Association of Art Critics), and IKOM Serbia (International Council of Museums).

BETWEEN COLONISATION OF SENSES AND CREATIVE RESISTANCE: Electronic Music In East Africa
Piotr Cichocki (PhD.)
In the contemporary postcolonial world, technologies transform all spheres of life, including music and the broadly defined arts. The presentation will illustrate the dynamics and character of these changes through the example of electric and electronic musical styles from East Africa. These new styles shape the experience of sound in major cities of East Africa as well as rural areas, where they merge with local aesthetics in unexpected ways.
The genealogy of these changes is intertwined with the introduction of technological objects and the mobility of people and their ability to adapt available technologies in their own way. At the same time, the development of electric and electronic music in East Africa is part of a longer process that started with consolidation of colonial rule through the introduction of various types of technology. The presentation will trace the adaptation of electronic tools for producing, sharing, and listening to music. The examples include recording studios, keyboards, and virtual instruments and how they affect local aesthetics and performative practices. Remarkable cases are innovative uses of applications such as Auto-Tune and Fruity Loops Studio.
Electronic sounds in East Africa are profoundly popular, even though local listeners participate minimally in the pop music market dominated by the global West. So, where do they draw their inspiration, patterns, and samples from? Can we talk about African local music infused with electronics as rooted in “tradition,” or more as music of the future that we poorly understand from a European perspective? This narration will be ensounded with contemporary and historical recordings, including the music published by 1000HZ Records, curated by Piotr Cichocki (the presenter).
Piotr Cichocki (PhD.) is a researcher, lecturer, musician, producer and publisher. He holds the position of assistant professor in the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, University of Warsaw. On top of that, he curates the ethnomusicological, experimental recording label 1000HZ.
Among his recent works are writings on “Ethnographic Ear” and sound production in Malawian music studios, ethnographic audio-papers and radio plays, and the intermedia exhibition “Cargo/(Im)materiality”.
The program is implemented with the support of the Polish Institute in Belgrade.
