Creative Workshop for Children
"Understanding Beauty: Jewelry of the Maasai people"
May 6, 13, 20 & 27, 11h

Following the exhibition "Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda: 1937-1939. Photographs of Koloman Trčka", the workshop for children “Understanding Beauty: Jewelry of the Maasai People” aims to present to the youngest visitors of Museum, the techniques and main motifs that occur as part of the decoration of bracelets, necklaces and hats of the Maasai.

The Maasai live in the territory of today's Kenya and Tanzania, and they have been making handmade jewelry for hundreds of years. Jewelry is carried by all members of the community, both men and women, at ceremonies and special occasions, as well as in daily life. Their understanding of beauty is visible on the necklaces and bracelets of vibrant colors and different geometric shapes. In addition to the beauty of the form, every piece of jewelry also reveals the complex symbolism of the motif, because the colors used have certain meanings: red is a sign of courage and unity, blue is the sign of power, sky and water, green is the sign of earth and food, orange of heat and friendship, yellow of fertility and sun, white of purity and milk, black of harmony. During creation of traditional Maasai jewelry, colored beads are used as well as natural materials such as shells, seeds and dried plants. During the workshop "Understanding Beauty: Jewelry of Maasai People", all participants will have the opportunity to use collage, colorful fabrics, leaves, different colors, wool, etc. and to make their own samples of selected jewelry - necklace, headpiece and / or bracelet.

The Workshop is in Serbian.

* Entrance: 150 RSD

** The workshop does not require reservation!

*** Parents and guardians are kindly asked to bring children on time so that children are able to fully participate in the structured and prepared programme, and take full advantage of the creative time spent in the museum.
