POLES APART
Exhibition by Massinissa Selmani

Promise #5, 2018. Graphite and
coloured pencil on paper, 49 x 63 cm.
Anne-Sarah Bénichou Gallery.

The exhibition will be opened by H.E. M. Frédéric Mondoloni

The Museum of African Art, 14 Andre Nikolića Street

Massinissa Selmani’s work finds its inspiration in socio-political issues, from press cuttings he has been collecting for a number of years. It is through confrontation and juxtaposition, without a logical coherence between these real-life elements that Massinissa creates enigmatic and ambiguous scenes, underlining the ironic, even tragic character of the absurd and strange situations represented in his drawings.

Thirteen images from six series have been shown at the exhibition Poles Apart in Belgrade’s Museum of African Art – “Alterables”, “Survey of the Outside”, “Shapeshifters”, “Scale Models”, “Moody’s” and “Promise”, including two works that are not part of a particular series: “Interval” and “Untitled #3”. Besides the drawings, two animations are exhibited: “Potential Memories. Alteration #1” and “Untitled”.

Lives and works in France and Algeria. Following his computer studies in Algeria, he was accepted into the École supérieure des BeauxArts de Tours. Massinissa Selmani, whose work was awarded an honourable mention by the jury of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, has participated in numerous solo and collective exhibitions, both in France and overseas. Winner of the Art [ ] Collector Prize and the SAM Prize in 2016, Massinissa Selmani has also exhibited his work in the first edition of the Triennale de Vendôme, the Dakar Biennale and in the 13th Biennale de Lyon in 2015.

REFLECTIONS OF MEDIA MACHINERY AS CURRENT ARTISTIC TENDENCY

Talk with artist Massinissa Selmani & Boško Prostran, member of the Doppelganger art duo

Talk moderator: Ana Knežević, art historian (MAA)

Entrance: free

Media Machinery is the primary focus in Massinissa Selmani’s work, as well as the Belgrade-based duo Dоplegеngеr, which they deal with using different art media. Selmani relies on juxtaposition and newspaper photograph reproduction to reveal the dual impact of media on humans in the 21st century. It is “at the same time damaged and imagined by the media machinery”. By rereading images in the “context of media machinery” the Dоplgеngеr art duo reconsiders the media’s narrative and influence on the observer.

Their shared point of departure is realised through appropriation – of journalistic photography or TV/film clips through which these artist do not intend to present reality, but rather, to analyse imagery generated by the reality in question, including our experience of those images. Our encounter with Massinissa Selmani and Prostran will be an opportunity to question media machinery as a form of current artistic practice, the montage technique applied by these artists in their work, as well as the tragic-comical elements that invite the observer to react and “re-frame” the TV screen/newspaper.

Massinissa Selmani is an artist whose drawings, collages, animations and installations present a combination of humour and irony, a sort of a reaction provoked by everyday social and political world events. Despite the extreme e simplicity of his expression, Selmani’s works strikingly conjure up the artist’s perception of reality – a world overflowing with images, events and information whose true essence can only be perceived through meticulous discernment. Selamni’s work has earned a special award at the 56th Venice Biennale, and besides taking part in numerous group exhibitions, he has exhibited solo both in and outside France. He is the winner of the Art [ ] Collector and SAM Art Projects awards.

They rely on the tradition of experimental film and video and through some of the actions of these traditions intervene on the existing media products or produce in the expanded cinema forms. Although their main media is moving image, their work is realized through the text, installations, performances, lectures and discussions.
