MAU on tour - Exhibition at the National Assembly of Algeria
ZDRAVKO PEČAR: THE FIRST YUGOSLAV REPORTER OF THE ALGERIAN REVOLUTION
24–30 April 2025
At the invitation of the President of the Parliament, Mr. Brahim Boughali, and with the support of the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Algeria, Mrs. Ana Petković, the exhibition will open on April 24 at the National People's Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The exhibition centers on Zdravko Pečar, a distinguished Yugoslav journalist, historian, diplomat, and the visionary founder of the Museum of African Art in Belgrade (MAU). It invites viewers to explore his profound journey through pivotal historical moments, revolutionary endeavors, diplomatic initiatives, scientific research, and his invaluable contributions to literature, photography, and archival preservation. Pečar emerges as a figure deeply shaped by the political ideals of his time, yet always maintaining a critical, reflective stance. His work, rooted in anti-colonialism and a unique brand of humanism, with a particular focus on Africa, continues to resonate through his extensive body of publications, books, journalistic contributions, and the meticulous archives he curated. This exhibition also serves as a dynamic educational platform, shedding light on Pečar’s multifaceted legacy as a revolutionary, partisan, informal ambassador, and historian—roles he embodied both within and beyond the academic world. His tireless research efforts culminated in the founding of MAU, a distinctive institution that, even nearly half a century later, remains a space where Africa and the Middle East can be discussed, studied, and written about in diverse and meaningful ways.
Titled Zdravko Pečar: The First Yugoslav Reporter of the Algerian Revolution, this exhibition draws from "Zdravko Pečar: (Self)Portraits", which was presented at MAU in 2024 to commemorate thirty years since Pečar’s passing. With the support of the Speaker of the Algerian Parliament, Mr. Brahim Boughali and Mrs. Ana Petković, Ambassador of Serbia in Algeria, the exhibition’s core elements will be showcased at the National Assembly headquarters in Algeria, where it will open to the public on April 24, 2025.
The Museum delegation includes Dr. Marija Aleksić, Director, and curators Emilia Epštajn and Milica Josimov.
