MAU & CONGO WEEK 2025
Sunday, 19 October 2025, 09:00 EDT / 15:00 CEST
The Museum of African Art proudly supports the Friends of the Congo organization and the global initiative Congo Week 2025 (19–25 October), dedicated to honoring the resilience, creativity, and voices of the Congolese people.
As part of this year’s commemoration, the Museum presents a short video feature highlighting a lesser-known episode from Belgrade’s history — the expressions of solidarity shown in 1961, following the assassination of Congolese independence leader Patrice Lumumba.
This moment of profound empathy reflected Yugoslavia’s broader engagement in the Non-Aligned Movement and its commitment to anti-colonial struggles across Africa.
Through this contribution, the Museum reaffirms its mission to preserve and share the intertwined histories of Africa and the former Yugoslavia, while celebrating Congo’s enduring role in the global story of freedom and self-determination.
The video will be available from Sunday, 19 October, at 09:00 (EDT – Washington time) / 15:00 (CEST – Belgrade time):
