ART WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN
  • - How did people make the great rock art of Namibia?
  • - How did Spider Anansi clean the king’s garden and win the spotted cow!? Storytelling from Ghana.
  • - How to make a mancala board with recyclable materials?
  • - How, with a bit of clay and “flowers in your heart” can you make a true work of art? Learn about the art of Jamaica.

This year we have selected a number of interesting topics for our youngest and most creative visitors. Through art, children will explore, learn and demonstrate the importance of land and water, anger and solidarity, and how art opens and creates new and interesting ways of conversing.

Workshops are held by: Emma Ashantide (Ghana), longtime Museum friend and associate, artist Nevine Salmon (Jamaica) and Museum curators.

15-20h
MANCALA TOURNAMENT

After several months of preparation through the Mancala Rules! programme, we are ready for the big mancala tournament!

Mancala is a cognitive board game based on different variants of the game found across four continents: Africa, Asia, South and North America. During two days of the Afro Festival mancala tournaments in 2 categories, for children and grownups, will be held. The tournament opens its doors to those who diligently practiced as well as those who will learn the rules of the game for the first time at the Festival. The rules are simply and easy to learn, however what is not easy is – WINNING!

To become a good “mancalist” no previous knowledge is necessary. The rules are simple however it is not easy to score. What is developed through mancala is quick calculation, strategic thinking and tactics. Also, playing mancala is a good opportunity to develop communicational skills, forge friendships and meet new people.

The multimedia exhibition “Mancala, game of Thought” by Ivana Vojt, was awarded PROJECT OF THE YEAR award by the National Committee of ICOM (International Council of Museums) – the international organisation of museums and museum professionals within UNESCO.

ZORAN NASKOVSKI, AAA (THE SOUND I SAW) 2011. – 2013.

The subtitle of Zoran Naskovski’s installation „AAA“ (The Sound I Saw) refers to the project/book bearing the same title by American artist Roy DeCarava. It consist of a stream of text and black and white photographs of the jazz scene and everyday life, shot in Harlem during the late 1950s and the early 1960s. The pages of this book, attached only in the upper part and placed along a lit showcase inside which are African objects selected by Museum curators, accompanied by three microphones set to echo effect, are the basis of the artwork which offers the possibility of active participation. This installation within the permanent Museum display space enhanced by the introduction of video in 2013 additionally emphasizes the importance of the reconsideration of one’s own position in the context of contemporaneity, media flux, artefacts, as well as the museum itself.

DISCUSSION: Branislav Dimitrijević (PhD), art theoretician, Radina Vučetić (PhD), historian and Zoran Naskovski, artist and author of „AAA“

* The “AAA” installation was first displayed at the Museum of African Art as part of the biennial program AFRAM (African-American-Music). Project authors: Jelena Jovović, jazz musician/professor and Narcisa Knežević-Šijan, Museum Director.

BENEFACTORS

Presentation of the “Ethiopian Cloak” (gift of Prince Asfa-Wossen Asserate)

A public talk about Museum gifts, its benefactors and official presentment of acknowledgements

The initial collection of the Museum of African Art was based on a gift to the City of Belgrade by Veda and Dr Zdravko Pečar back in 1974. Founded on a collection of objects, predominantly from West Africa, Belgrade’s museum of African Art throughout the years developed its rich artistic and educational practice, thus enabling it to impact generations of students, pupils and artists. Following this first “ample donation” by the Pečar family, a number of other donations ensued. Thus the museum has managed not only to enlarge its collections and widen the field of work for its curators, but also to, secure the cultural heritage of the City of Belgrade for future generations. Through the donations of both individual objects and entire collections, by individuals and families, the Museum is now able to proudly present collections of Ethiopian art and the art of Central Africa, as well artefacts from Cameron, Congo, Egypt and Algeria. With the aim of showing its gratitude to individuals and families who have contributed not only to the museum’s collections, but who have also facilitated the enrichment of Belgrade’s culture the Museum will present its BENEFACTORS with an official acknowledgement.
