By expert assessment the African collection of the Museum is qualified as representative.
Aside from the permanent display, which mainly features the traditional arts of west Africa, the Museum organizes changing exhibitions as a way of presenting the most important segments of traditional and contemporary African art. The purpose of the exhibitions, as well as a diverse range of programs, is to cover not only west Africa, but also the other regions that are underrepresented by the material from the museum collection – north, east, central and south Africa.
The presentation of Africa’s cultural heritage is realized in the form of exhibitions, lectures, film and video screenings, art and music workshops. Publishing is an important activity of the Museum which includes exhibition catalogues, scholarly books, program brochures, as well as an annual journal Afrika – Journal of the Museum of African Art. The Museum is also an important documentation center, in that it archives photographic, audio, video and film records.
The Museum of African Art takes part in various cultural programs and festivals that are on offer in Belgrade: BELEF – Belgrade Summer Festival, BEMUS – Belgrade Music Festivities, Days of Belgrade organized by the City of Belgrade, museum initiatives such as the Museum Night or the ICOM symposia, the Month of Francophonie organized by the French Cultural Center in Belgrade, events of the Goethe Institut in Belgrade, etc.
The quality and number of the Museum of African Art productions are reflected not only in the Museum’s activities and exhibitions, but also in the continuing and intensive educational, scientific and research work, distinguishing this institution as an important factor in the cultural life of Belgrade and the wider region.

Istraživanjem i izlagajem umetničkih predmeta afričkih naroda i organizovanjem studijskih, gostujućih i informativnih izložbi, organizovanjem predavanja i drugih programa, izdavanjem kataloga zbirki i stručnih publikacija, Muzej afričke umetnosti postaje sve značajniji centar za istraživanje, upoznavanje i širenje saznanja o kulturi afričkih naroda, posebno njihove umetnosti i doprinosa umetničkoj baštini sveta.

An above average number of twins is born on the African continent, compared to other parts of the world. The Yoruba people, who live in southwest Nigeria, have the highest rate of multiple births in the world. The Yoruba people, as well as other African cultures, attribute supernatural origins and spiritual power to twins. According to their beliefs, every person has a double in the heavens. Twins are children who are born along with their heavenly counterpart. The name for twins in yoruba is ibeji, meaning “born two times”, which also the name of the divinity that protects them. Twin children are regarded as divine blessings which bring happiness to their family if they are cared for and treated with respect. The cult dedicated to twins is based on these beliefs.

/The “Images and Memories” exhibition recreates the historical moment, as well as the social and personal motifs that guided the creation of a very interesting and to a certain extent neglected collection of object at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade
The African gourd – calabash – as object of everyday use left a deep mark in the imagination of both travellers and local populations of the African continent. The former created a web of metaphors and myths around this plant and object; the latter perceived it as an inevitable part of the experiential and notional “African landscape”. The “Images and Memories” exhibition traces the African gourd through the collections of the MAA – from objects such as vessels, ladles and musical instruments, to sculptures and applied arts objects that reproduce the calabash motif. This approach questions the firm line created between what is considered to be an authentic “ethnographic” object juxtaposing it with souvenir objects. The set design of the exhibition is supported with postcards and photographs covering the period between the late 1950s to the early 1980s, as well as interesting notes of the Museum founders Zdravko and Veda Pečar from the times of their residence in Africa.
